Dad’s First Gift to Baby: More Than Just Toys

Becoming a dad is a life-changing experience, and while newborns don’t understand gifts yet, there are still meaningful ways to mark the occasion. Here are some ideas that go beyond the usual baby toys and clothes.
1. If you have a passion, find a way to incorporate it into a gift
I started this blog for Zozo. My hope is that, one day, we’ll be spending time together reviewing products and sharing experiences. Since I’m a software developer, I also bought her a web domain with her name and plan to set up a website for her.
If you have a passion, find a way to incorporate it into a gift:
- If you're into cars, get your newborn a custom number plate.
- If you're a musician, write them a custom song.
- If you do woodwork, build something special for them.
These small investments can mean a lot when they grow up.
2. An Investment Account
I created an investment account for Zozo under my name. Every cash gift she receives is deposited there and invested in safe ETFs. Thanks to compounding, by the time she grows up, she’ll have a significant amount waiting for her. I started this when I first heard my wife was pregnant, and I believe it’s one of the best financial gifts a dad can give.
3. A Tree or Plant to Mark Their Birth
Consider planting a tree in your garden to symbolize their growth. If you live in an apartment, get a plant like a monstera to mark their birth. It’s a simple yet beautiful way to commemorate their arrival.
4. A Healthier You
Dads, take care of yourselves. When I found out my wife was pregnant, I made a commitment to eat better and work out. I lost 12 kgs and gained muscle before Zozo was born because I wanted to be fit and active for her. I wanted her to look back at photos and be proud of her dad. Investing in your health is a long-term gift for both you and your child.
These gifts aren’t about spending a lot of money; they’re about thoughtfulness and long-term impact.
